River Flooding And Fire Mitigation Assistance Offered By Team Rubicon

The City has been talking to different agencies for several years regarding the river flooding the town on the west side, and has gotten nowhere as far as a solution. A few months ago, the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission put us in contact with Team Rubicon, which is a non-profit volunteer organization that assists in disasters and fire mitigation. Several weeks ago, a representative from Team Rubicon looked at the the riverbed, the bridge, and all the brush that is a fire hazard. Pending permission from the land owners on the north and the south sides of the bridge as well as obtaining a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers to work in a waterway, Team Rubicon has committed to assisting the city. They plan to mobilize in Lefors from June 6th-13th and will be bringing 25-30 volunteers and heavy equipment for brush and sand removal. They plan to remove trees in the riverbed and also some sand for approximately 50 feet on both sides of the bridge. The City is donating use of our dump truck to haul off trees and brush, and the school has agreed to allow the volunteers to use the showers at the field house for the week. They will be setting up cots either in the civic center or the field house. Smith Family Septic has graciously donated two portable toilets to set on site. The Red Cross will be helping with meals, and we have reached out to the church and the senior citizens center for assistance with meals as well. Any donation of meals will be appreciated!
The City is thankful that this group has agreed to help, and their work should improve the conditions at the bridge. You can read more about Team Rubicon by clicking here
